Something to Answer For by PH Newby was the first winner of the Booker Prize in 1969. The book has faded from view, but the prize lives on as the UK’s best-known award for fiction. Next year, it will have a new sponsor for the first time since 2002, after Man Group, the listed hedge fund manager, decided to end its relationship with the prize.
