About Birmingham Opera Company
We make great opera. We reflect the city we work in: with our diverse audiences, artists and the stories that we tell. Every year our small team draws some of the world’s most exciting artists to Birmingham and hundreds of volunteers contribute their experience and energy as performers or collaborators in making work which speaks to the lives and experience of our audiences. With over 70 targeted events per year, across Birmingham and Sandwell, 98% of those audiences are new to us and may never have experienced opera before. We compete at the highest industry level and have won the most prestigious industry awards including: The Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Award for Opera and Music Theatre 2012 and 2019 and the International Opera Award Best Production 2015, Fedora Education Prize 2020 21 and the Critics’ Award for Achievement in Opera 2022 and nominated for a South Bank Show Sky Arts Award in 2022.
“The international, multicultural, multi-everything cast was expertly chosen.”-
Fiona Maddocks, The Observer
With over 50% of our volunteers and audiences coming from the least economically thriving demographics, the social diversity of our audiences and performers are the envy of the Music World and we have won the RPS Award for Audience Development twice and nominated three times.
The Future
Our success has recently been endorsed by a 20% increase in our Arts Council England NPO grant for 2023-26, enabling us to explore a new vision for the Company. With extension funding until March 2027 (tbc March 2025) and our next NPO application (2027-30) due July 2025, the General Manager will be joining the company at a key juncture as we strive to develop the work of Birmingham Opera Company regionally, nationally and internationally.
The Job
As a key part of this mission we are seeking to appoint a General Manager on a two year contract 2025- 2027 with the possibility for renewal during the contract on the confirmation of the NPO 2027-30 in May 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious candidate to join a ground – breaking company in a key management role.
