Professor PAUL GOUGH will chair the board of Bristol’s international centre for contemporary arts from 5 January.

Chief executive of the Arnolfini, SUZANNE ROLT, said Gough’s experience made him an “ideal match” for the organisation, citing his work in the visual arts and broadcasting.

Gough, who trained as a painter at the Royal College of Art, formerly held the role of principal and vice chancellor of Arts University Bournemouth.

As an author, he has written a series of biographies on British artists, and has presented programmes for the likes of the BBC.

“Paul is an ideal match for Arnolfini and has the skills and experience needed to lead us forward into the next chapter of our history,” Rolt said.

“As well as being a practising artist, broadcaster and writer on the visual arts, he is closely connected with the cultural sector in the region and has worked in senior university roles in this country and across the world. He is highly and warmly thought of across the city and has a deep understanding of the importance of the arts in people’s lives.”

Gough said he was “excited” to begin the role at a “values-driven organisation”, adding: “I have known Arnolfini as a leading arts institution for many decades. Respected and admired all over the world, it reaches out and inspires artists, performers, educators and diverse communities across the region and country.”
