ArtsEd names principal for ‘new chapter’ after bullying controversy
London drama school ArtsEd has selected LOUISE JACKSON as its new principal from July 2025.
Jackson’s appointment follows the departure last summer of former principal JULIE SPENCER, who resigned after an independent report into allegations of bullying and favouritism found her professional relationship with employees had been “damaged beyond repair”.
Spencer was the second ArtsEd Principal to quit in three years after predecessor CHRIS HOCKING resigned in October 2021 following a separate external investigation regarding misconduct allegations between 2012 and 2017 at the drama school.
Jackson has previously held leadership and teaching roles at BIMM University, Trinity Laban and the University of Chichester. Her research has focused on specialist arts education and developing inclusive approaches to teaching and curriculum.
“Education is a powerful force for transformation, and I am committed to fostering an environment where creativity, passion and excellence can thrive,” said Jackson.
“Together, we will build on ArtsEd’s impressive history, embracing innovation while staying true to the values that make this institution so special. ArtsEd is perfectly positioned to be at the forefront, in the UK and internationally, of training that is representative of 21st century Britain and beyond.”
Acting chair, FARIDA MANNAN added: “Louise’s arrival will signal the beginning of an exciting new chapter for ArtsEd, overlapping, as it does, with the imminent appointment of a permanent chair of trustees and other new members of the board.”
