The Courtauld announces new Director

The Courtauld Institute of Art in London has appointed MARK HALLETT as its new Märit Rausing Director. 

Hallett is a historian, curator and academic leader. He completed his Master’s degree and PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art, following his first degree from the University of Cambridge. 

His appointment is to succeed former Director DEBORAH SWALLOW who retired after 18 years in post.

Hallett's post will take effect in August next year as he concludes his tenure as Director of the Paul Mellon Centre. During his time there, Hallett supported and published research on British art and architecture of all periods and oversaw the launch of its New Narratives initiative, a set of awards aiming to support students and researchers from a diverse range of backgrounds.  

Last year, Hallett was appointed a member of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest which advises the UK government on the export of cultural property.

Chairman of The Courtauld LORDE BROWNE of Madingley said Hallett brings with him “a reputation for scholarly work at the highest level, broad curatorial experience, and excellent management skills” and is “well-equipped to lead the institution as we implement the next phase of our ambitious development initiative”.

Hallett’s directorial responsibilities include overseeing the next phase of Courtland Connects, a £57m redevelopment project.
