Duke of Edinburgh becomes Southbank patron
London’s Southbank Centre has announced the DUKE OF EDINBURGH, PRINCE EDWARD, as its new patron, a role previously held by his mother QUEEN ELIZABETH.
Before becoming a full-time working royal in 2022, the Duke worked in theatre and television production. Southbank Centre said he “takes a keen interest in the arts, and champions the opportunities the industry offers young people to develop their confidence and skills”.
This week the Duke visited the venue’s Queen Elizabeth Hall – opened by Queen Elizabeth in March 1967 – where he met participants from The Technical Academy, a programme run by the centre offering hands-on training in live events and theatre.
He also met staff at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre’s contemporary arts space.
ELAINE BEDELL, Southbank Centre’s CEO, said the venue “belongs to the nation and offers a space for everyone, regardless of their background”.
“Despite challenging times for the sector, we are determined to continue to bring people together through the arts,” she added. “The Duke of Edinburgh’s shared belief in the power of the arts, and his support means a great deal, and we are thrilled he has joined us as our new patron.”
The venue’s chair MISAN HARRIMAN added that he was “hugely grateful” for the Duke’s support.
