SAM THORNE, Director of Nottingham Contemporary, is stepping down from his role in October.

During his tenure, Thorne has been responsible for strengthening the gallery's commitment to education and upholding its reputation for innovative, experimental exhibitions.

Nottingham Contemporary said Thorne’s commitment will leave a lasting impression, with a vision that will continue to shape the organisation, programmes and local cultural community.

Board Chair MATT SYMONDS said Thorne's "exceptional direction has had a marked influence on both the institution and the city".

"Over his tenure as director, Sam has led Nottingham Contemporary to be a leading force in the UK’s institutional landscape. Sam has overseen a formidable programme and it is with great fondness that we say a sad farewell."

Thorne said he is tremendously proud of his time at the gallery.

"This has been a truly collective effort, and I want to thank everybody who has played a part. This is a critical moment for cultural institutions everywhere, and we need spaces for experimentation, education and debate more than ever. I look forward to coming back, as a visitor, to see where Nottingham Contemporary goes next."

He leaves Nottingham Contemporary to assume the role of Director General and CEO at Japan House London, which will see him work closely with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to manage cultural partnerships between Europe and Japan.

Nottingham Contemporary is currently recruiting for Thorne’s successor.
