JAMES DACRE has been appointed chair of the board of trustees of Theatre503.

Taking up the role from 27 November, Dacre succeeds ERICA WHYMAN, who steps down as chair following after 10 years in post.

Dacre joins the new writing-focused company ahead of the opening of a new studio space in Nine Elms and as it begins the search for its next artistic director.

Former artistic director LISA SPIRLING announced earlier this month that she would be departing to take up the reigns as artistic director and joint CEO at Stratford East. Dacre and Whyman will both co-chair the recruitment panel.

A director and creative producer, Dacre was artistic director of Royal & Derngate Theatres from 2013–2023 and previously held roles as associate director at New Vic Theatre, Theatre503, and the National Youth Theatre.

He recently founded Living Productions, which produces theatre, film, concerts and festivals. He is board director of Spirit of 2012 and a trustee for The Theatres Trust and Talawa Theatre Company.

“Theatre503 had a huge impact upon my career and life,” said Dacre.

“Its vision to be the most significant new writers’ theatre in the world is not hyperbole, for it has discovered some of the most important and diverse theatrical voices of the past 20 years.

“I’m thrilled to be joining such a distinguished board and talented senior team at this exciting time.”

Spirling and executive director EMILY CAREWE said, “James’s longstanding relationship with the history of Theatre503, alongside his incredible career as a leader and director, working with some of the most exciting writers across our sector, makes him a hugely meaningful and trusted Chair to guide Theatre503 through our next chapter.”
