East London theatre closes due to RAAC

The Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford has closed until at least 2025 after potentially dangerous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was found in the building.

All shows throughout the autumn and winter, and “into next year”, have been cancelled, said an announcement from Vision, the charity that runs culture and leisure services for Redbridge Council. It said events will be relocated “where possible”.

The cancellations include the venue’s planned pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. A Christmas show will be held in the smaller Redbridge Drama Centre.

“Following a detailed appraisal of the condition of the RAAC concrete we have had no choice but to close the theatre to protect the public’s safety,” said Vision.

Engineers have “outlined significant work that needs to be carried out to remove the RAAC concrete from the building, which means that sadly the theatre will need to be closed for the coming months,” the charity added.

“We will work relentlessly to make sure our theatre comes back shining brighter, and we assure you that the works undertaken will mean we have a theatre in Redbridge for many years to come.”
