Beck Theatre saved after new lease agreement signed
Beck Theatre has been spared from looming closure after Hillingdon Council secured a new operator for the venue.
Parkwood Theatres has agreed a 15-year lease with the council, with the possibility of a further ten-year extension.
The venue’s current operator, Trafalgar Theatres, has been embroiled in a row over contract negotiations with the council, leading to the company revealing plans to exit the venue in January.
Last month, the council accused Trafalgar Theatres of purposefully operating at a loss. Meanwhile, campaigners have been fighting against the venue’s possible closure.
With the signing of a new lease agreement, the council says there will be a seamless transition following the end of its partnership with Trafalgar Theatres on January 13, with no need for the Beck to close.
‘‘Our aim was always to retain and preserve the Beck Theatre as part of our valued cultural offer whilst we continue our drive to deliver value for money services for residents,” said Ian Edwards, leader of Hillingdon Council.
“We said we were committed to keeping the theatre open as we recognise the importance of this theatre for the local community and beyond, particularly for the many generations that have visited and hold those memories dear.”
Tony Doherty, managing director of Parkwood Theatres, added: ‘‘We are delighted to be working with Hillingdon Council to secure a long-term future for the Beck Theatre and look forward to preserving its legacy while bringing fresh and exciting opportunities to the stage.”
