The People’s Story Museum in Edinburgh will reopen on 2 December after public and political outcry that it had been quietly shuttered due to staff shortages and a recruitment freeze.

Addressing the Scottish parliament, Scottish Culture Secretary Angus Robertson branded the closure “shameful”, adding that the lack of any consultation had caused  “absolute consternation”.

The museum had been due to shut for seven months over the winter to save costs when the building’s premature closure emerged.

Culture and communities convener at Edinburgh City Council Val Walker said that after listening closely to the community’s “passionate feedback”, the museum would resume a seven-day schedule from next month as officers work to “identify funding and resources which will facilitate the reopening of the museum”.
