European theatres will reduce their carbon admissions to at least net zero by 2030 to create a “more sustainable, conscious, mindful and just future”.

All 46 theatres in the European Theatre Convention (ETC) network have signed the Sustainable Action Code, which focuses on environmentally friendly changes to theatre organisations, buildings and productions.

ETC Director Heidi Wiley said having a public sustainability target helps make the theatre sector a “lighthouse for change”.

ETC President Serge Rangoni added: “It’s a huge topic that we have to handle with the theatres, theatre staff, and artists. But it is the moment to reflect on this, particularly as we rebuild again.”
