Security guard strike planned at London museums
Security guards at the Science Museum, Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum and Natural History Museum are planning to strike throughout February.
The planned action is over demands for better pay and follows a strike which took place from 17 to 21 January over stagnant pay levels.
The union behind the planned action, United Voices of the World (UWW), says 100 of its members work as security guards at the three museums and are all employed by external contractor Wilson James.
A statement from the union says the workers are fighting for a pay rise to £16 per hour, sick pay from day one and full parity with directly employed museum staff, including more annual leave and an annual bonus.
It referred to February’s planned action as “unprecedented” and “the longest strike in the history of all three institutions”.
A Wilson James spokesperson told The Art Newspaper the company offers competitive compensation and is committed to transparent negotiations with recognised unions.
“While we acknowledge the demands put forward by UVW, we are seeking a resolution that balances fair pay with the need to remain financially responsible,” the statement added.
