Arts Minister Chris Bryant has admitted touring for musicians post-Brexit is “simply not economically viable”.

Bryant’s comments came in response to a parliamentary question from SNP politician Stephen Gethins on the impact leaving the EU has had on British artists.

The MP for Rhondda and Ogmore said the government recognises the scale of challenges facing musicians wishing to tour internationally.

“We are already working collaboratively with the live music sector to address these key issues for our brilliant musicians, artists and their support staff and are engaging with the EU and EU member states, with a view to improving arrangements for touring across the European continent without seeing a return to free movement,” Bryant said.

“This is a priority for the whole ministerial team, the department and the government.”

The music industry has long warned against the implications of Brexit on artists wishing to tour the continent.

Last month, industry body UK Music said fighting for visa-free touring for musicians and crew is one of four key areas where urgent action is needed to support the UK’s music industry.
